Essential Oils for Pain Management

Essential oils for pain can be very effective and fortunately do not come with negative side effects. Every essential oil contains multiple medicinal properties that assist the systems of the body. There are over 60 different essential oils for pain that have analgesic properties. Analgesic means that a substance has shown to relieve or reduce pain.

Wintergreen Essential Oil  contains 85-99% of methyl salicylate, the same component of aspirin and can work very well for natural pain relief. In fact, birch and wintergreen were considered the best essential oils for pain before synthetics pain killers were introduced in the early 1920s.

Birch and wintergreen are the only plants in the world that naturally contain methyl salicylate. It is documented that these oils have

cortisone-like  effects that can relieve pain quickly.
There are many types of pain and everyone's body chemistry is different. So what may work best for one person, may not work best for another. My suggestion is to select one or two oils (or a blend) to use and find out what oils are right for you. Write down your experiences so you can remember and recognize any changes.

I have found doTERRAs Soothing blend incredibly successful for pain relief, in particular for headaches, for when my children hurt themselves, and for aching muscles.

Below is a testimonial from Polly Delany, mother of two young boys, who has managed to overcome chronic pain by using essential oils. Polly’s story is very inspiring and Polly has also shared some practical tips on using oils for pain management:

"I was diagnosed with Chronic Pain Syndrome in 2004. What this means is that my brain and nervous system couldn't differentiate between normal signals from nerves and pain signals, so I suffered from constant pain and was on maximum doses of pain relief including opiates.

This condition was caused by a poorly treated viral throat infection which I had in 2002. I saw many doctors and specialists looking for a treatment if I couldn't have a cure. I tried silver and gold injections; wheat and sugar and dairy free diets; low dose chemotherapy; hospitalization with ketamine (horse tranquilizer); every medication under the sun; most alternative treatments including reki, acupuncture, physiotherapy, chiropractic. The only think that helped was opiates, but we had to keep increasing the dose until I was on patches as the lag between the pill wearing off and being able to take the next one was too hard to bear. These are normally proscribed for people with terminal cancer.

I managed to get off most of the medications as I was desperate to have a child, and my doctors thought that it may reset my brain. I was very fortunate to become pregnant very quickly, and was in much less pain while pregnant. As soon as I stopped breastfeeding, the pain returned. I got pregnant again, and the same thing happened. Unfortunately, I couldn't keep having babies just to have a life with minimal pain.

My good friend introduced me to doTERRA Essential Oils initially to help me loose the baby weight. I had great results, so we investigated what else the oils could do for me.
Frankincense is a great anti-inflammatory, so I started taking two or three drops four times a day. I was also using the Soothing Blend oil on the major sore spots (my hands and feet), and the Grounding Blend. I started to feel relief in a few weeks. I was very happy with this as I was able to manage my pain with just Panadol Osteo (a higher amount of paracetamol than regular panadol) and the oils.

I wasn't a fan of all of the blood tests I needed to make sure that my liver was still coping as I was having a lot of paracetamol, which can cause liver failure. I decided to take the Life Long Vitality supplements as they were reported to help support the body to heal and have good health. In just over a month on half a dose of the supplements, I realised that I wasn't taking my panadol very often.
By continuing the supplements, along with the frankincense, I have been able to manage my pain without any paracetamol for over a year. On days when the pain is very strong (which happens less and less), I take a capsule with 6 drops of frankincense and 6 drops of marjoram, and it takes care of it very quickly, without any risk to my liver or stomach.

While I have been told that I will always have this condition as it is an autoimmune disease, I am confident that it will have less effect on my day to day life. Even now I forget a lot of the time that I have it.

For chronic pain, I suggest that you try the LLV, and take 2 drops of frankincense internally twice a day. The new product DDR Prime is a great alternative as it has a lot of frankincense in it and also helps the body to repair itself. For sudden pain, like migraines, frankincense on the roof of the mouth can be helpful, as can a capsule of 6 drops frankincense and 6 drops of marjoram.

Deep Blue oil and rub are great for localized pain, including arthritis, and torn muscles. I also use it on my children when they bump their heads as it reduces bruising and swelling. I have literally watched an egg go down on my two year old's head after he came off his bike onto the concrete path.

To help heal the underlying problem, try layering Balance, then lemongrass and marjoram, then Deep Blue. This will reduce swelling, improve blood flow, and support the body heal muscle and ligament damage. Please remember that the oils support the body to heal itself.’"

In addition to the above, you might also want to consider the following:
  • The AromaTouch technique, which utilizes a number of oils in a massage-like application that helps establish homeostasis or balance in the body.  For chronic pain some will find this application, repeated often, a source of relief.
  • The LifeLong Vitality Pack Supplements taken daily can help reduce inflammation and pain. They contain Tumeric, which is a very effective anti-inflammatory.
  • For chronic back pain, try layering 1 drop of lemongrass, ginger and patchouli two times a day.
