Essential Oils for Winter Wellness

This year, more than ever before, we need to take care of our health and wellbeing. Essential oils are a wonderful natural solution that help me to destress, get a better nights sleep, reduce my toxic load and so much more. I have written about how to use oils to support your wellness through winter in this blog. For this article, I wanted to take the chance to share with you my favourite oils to have to hand that help me through the winter months.

Eucalyptus
This wonderful oil gives off a soothing, cooling vapour, which is great to inhale or diffuse to promote feelings of a clear mind and relaxation. Eucalyptus has strong purifying properties so it's good for the skin, as a surface cleaner and in the air; it is also often found in mouth rinses for fresh breath and oral health.
  • Place two drops Eucalyptus oil on your shower floor while showering. The steam from the warm water creates a natural diffuser for the oil, leaving you with a clear, invigorated feeling.
  • Dilute with a carrier oil or lotion and massage into your chest to help clear breathing.
  • Next time you feel tense, place a few drops of Eucalyptus oil in your hands, cup your hands over your nose, and inhale deeply for a calming and energising boost.
  • Add one drop of Eucalyptus essential oil to your moisturiser and apply it to your skin for purifying and revitalising benefits.

doTerra OnGuard
This blend is incredibly powerful and versatile. OnGuard is a blend of Wild Orange, Clove, Cinnamon, Eucalytus and Rosemary Essential oils and can be incorporated into your everyday life to really enjoy its wonderful benefits.

doTerra Cheer
With a bright, fresh aroma, this uplifting blend was designed to help promote optimistic feelings whatever the weather!. The combination of the citrus and spice Wild Orange, Clove, Star Anise, Lemon Myrtle, Nutmeg, Vanilla, Ginger, Cinnamon and Zdravetz essential oils bring comfort to anyone who might be struggling, or who needs a boost of light and sunshine on a dark or dreary day.
  • Diffuse to brighten your day or during your morning yoga workout
  • Pop a few drops on a cotton wool ball and keep it in your car or your bag to enjoy through the day

Clove
Clove has a wonderful winter fragrance and is so versatile, you can use it in cooking, massage, and oral care.
  • Try Clove oil in a diffuser with Ginger and Cinnamon for an aromatic and warming winter aroma
  • Add a drop of Clove to your toothbrush before adding toothpaste to promote clean teeth and fresh breath
  • Try my Wassail hot drink recipe above
  • Make your own sugar scrub by combining Cassia, Ginger, and Clove oils, and enjoy smooth, exfoliated skin - the perfect Christmas gift (click here for more gift ideas)

Geranium
An oil with well-known beauty benefits, this oil has a beautiful floral scent, promotes the appearance of clear skin and can be used to give hair a vibrant glow.
  • Use one to two drops on your face daily to promote a glowing complexion and even skin tone. Geranium oil is particularly good at soothing and nourishing dry skin.
  • Add a few drops to your shampoo and conditioner to give your hair a radiant and healthy glow

doTerra ZenGest
This blend of Ginger, Peppermint, Caraway and  Fennel essential oils helps ease occasional stomach discomfort. You can use it internally or topically and it's available as an oil, a touch roller, and a range of softgels and tablets.  It's one of those oil blends I always turn to and would never be without - here are a few ways I've used it before:
  • Rub on the tummy to help with bloating before flying or taking a road trip for a calming aroma.
  • Take internally when trying new foods to soothe occasional stomach upset
  • Add a drop to water or tea to help maintain a healthy tummy

Lavender
As far back as Roman and Egyptian times, light and floral Lavender has been used as a perfume, for bathing, and in cooking. It’s so versatile but particularly great if you need a bit of help with sleeping.
  • Enjoy in a diffuser or pillow spray before going to sleep to promote a relaxing atmosphere
  • Add a drop into your moisturiser to soothe your skin
  • Very soothing for small burns
  • When cooking use a very small amount to soften citrus flavors in lemon sauces for chicken or fish, marmalades, citrus salads, or just to add a twist to marinades, cakes, and desserts.

Cinnamon Bark
Sweet, spicy and woody Cinnamon Bark is an oil that was once considered to be more valuable than Gold! Cinnamon is fragrant, flavoursome, and filled with many beneficial compounds. When taken internally in recipes or Veggie Capsules, it may help support healthy metabolic and immune functions.
  • Try a few drops in a carrier oil for a warming massage
  • Add drops to a water spray bottle for a really effective cleaner
  • Use in diffusers for a wonderful smell, that can also naturally repel insects
  • Add one drop to 100 ml of water and gargle for an effective mouth rinse and fresh breath
  • For baking and cooking to enhance the flavour of drinks, breads, desserts, and cakes
  • Add a drop to your hot chocolate for a warming and flavoursome drink

doTerra Adaptiv
This is such a powerful calming blend that helps me to manage any anxious feelings and everyday stress.  Often symptoms of stress can be felt physically with symptoms such as headaches and a lack of energy. This blend is designed to help in difficult or stressful situations to boost your mood, support healthy emotional responses, stabilise your hormones and reduce tension for those moments when it all feels overwhelming. This blend contains a unique phytochemical ingredient found in Sceletium Extract that brings a feeling of “alert serenity”. Try out some of these uses:
Diffuse to promote a centred and calm mindset
  • Add one to two drops to the palm of your hands, rub together, and inhale to help manage anxious feelings
  • Blend 3-4 drops in fractionated coconut oil for a relaxing massage
